Oliver Geddes was one of the UK’s most respected Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts – a lifelong martial artist, competitor, and teacher whose influence reached far beyond the mats. He passed away this year after a short and brave battle with cancer.

In 2015, Oliver filmed a series of instructional videos for Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood as part of the Progressive Jiu Jitsu Project. We are now honoured to release the first of these recordings, with the aim of preserving the legacy of his teaching, celebrating his extraordinary contribution to the art, and helping raise awareness of the Oliver Geddes Foundation.

The Oliver Geddes Foundation was created in accordance with his wishes, to carry forward the values that defined his life and to ensure that the places he loved most – the mats – remain accessible, welcoming, and strong.

The Foundation’s mission is to:

  • Support gyms in financial difficulty, helping them remain safe and inclusive spaces for all
  • Strengthen community bonds by encouraging initiatives that bring people together on and off the mats
  • Preserve Oliver’s spirit of kindness, openness, and connection that inspired everyone who knew him

Oliver’s story is one of passion, dedication, and compassion. He reminded us that martial arts is not just about fighting – it’s about community. Through the Foundation, his spirit lives on in every act of kindness and connection on the mats.

We plan to release more of these clips over the coming months to help preserve Oliver’s teaching and share his legacy with future generations.
