Oliver Geddes was one of the UK’s most respected Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts — a lifelong martial artist, competitor, and teacher whose influence reached far beyond the mats. He passed away this year after a short and brave battle with cancer.
In 2015, Oliver filmed a series of instructional videos for Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood as part of the Progressive Jiu Jitsu Project. We are honoured to share another of these recordings, continuing the release of his teaching with the aim of preserving his legacy, celebrating his extraordinary contribution to the art, and helping raise awareness of the Oliver Geddes Foundation.Â
This clip follows on from the previous arm triangle lesson, with Oliver demonstrating an Ezekiel choke finish from the same control — a simple, effective progression taught with his trademark clarity and attention to detail. The Oliver Geddes Foundation was created in accordance with his wishes, to carry forward the values that defined his life and to ensure that the places he loved most — the mats — remain accessible, welcoming, and strong.
The Foundation’s mission is to:
- Support gyms in financial difficulty, helping them remain safe and inclusive spaces for all
- Strengthen community bonds by encouraging initiatives that bring people together on and off the mats
- Preserve Oliver’s spirit of kindness, openness, and connection that inspired everyone who knew himÂ
Oliver’s story is one of passion, dedication, and compassion. He reminded us that martial arts is not just about fighting — it’s about community. Through the Foundation, his spirit lives on in every act of kindness and connection on the mats.
We will continue releasing further clips from this series over the coming months, helping preserve Oliver’s teaching and share his legacy with future generations.
