The bow and arrow choke is one of the most reliable finishes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. But when your opponent anticipates it and loads their weight onto your leg, the submission can stall quickly.
In this lesson, Oliver Geddes demonstrates a simple and highly effective re-roll to counter that defence — a clean, technical solution taught with his trademark clarity.
Filmed in 2015 as part of the Progressive Jiu Jitsu Project with Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood, this footage forms part of an ongoing series preserving Oliver’s teaching and sharing his legacy with the wider community.
Oliver Geddes was one of the UK’s most respected Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts — a lifelong martial artist, competitor, and teacher whose influence reached far beyond the mats. He passed away last year after a short and brave battle with cancer.
We are honoured to continue releasing these recordings — not only to preserve his knowledge, but to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to the art and support the work of the Oliver Geddes Foundation.
The Oliver Geddes Foundation aims to:
- Support gyms in financial difficulty
- Strengthen community through shared initiatives
- Preserve Oliver’s spirit of kindness, openness, and connection
This clip builds on earlier material in the series and reflects the depth and simplicity that defined Oliver’s teaching. We will be releasing further lessons over the coming months.
Upcoming Charity Seminar:
A special seminar in support of the Oliver Geddes Foundation will be held at Kingston Jiu Jitsu.

Oliver’s legacy lives on in every roll, every lesson, and every act of community on the mats.
