Should You Train BJJ When You're Sick? (Doctor and Black Belt Explains)

Every academy has seen it.

Someone turns up coughing, sneezing, and insisting they’re “fine to train.”

But is it actually a good idea to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when you’re sick?

As both a third-degree BJJ black belt and former emergency medicine doctor, I wanted to tackle this question properly.

In this video, I explain:

  • Why training while sick can delay your recovery

  • How you can spread illness to your training partners

  • Rare but serious complications such as myocarditis

  • Safe alternatives to training when you’re unwell

  • How to return to the mats safely after illness

The short answer?

If you’re genuinely unwell, the smartest decision is to rest.

You’ll recover faster, protect your teammates, and get back to training sooner.
